Cardstock is a backing for almost any print size that is intended to go into a frame. It's primary function is to keep the print from giving a warping or rippling appearance when viewed through glass. Prints that are mounted on cardstock and framed should have a matte cut to prevent the image's surface from touching the glass. Cardstock mounted prints that are placed into a frame and against glass often collect moisture with the result that the print becomes damaged.
